History Lesson
We’re finishing off the reading of the Viking Cup, an invitational tournament hosted by the Augustana College based out of Camrose, Alberta. The Czechoslovakian team headed to the 1989/1990 tourney played two exhibition games against the Wild Goose All Stars. Game one was played in Wilkie. Reading historical archives of the event from the Wilkie Press, we can see that Joe Cey, Dwayne Pernitsky, Rob Griffiths, Lorne Nielsen and Allan Acton were selected as Wilkie Outlaws reps. The Czech team won 7-3, and player of the game awards were awarded to Jeff Donaldson and Czech goalie Jiri Podesva. A couple days later, the teams convened at the Exhibition Stadium for game two. Reading the archives from the Kindersley Clarion, we can see that the aforementioned Donaldson, along with Dan Leier, Dean Braham, Corey Thompson, Mark Werner and current Kliipers executive member Gary McManus played in at least one of the games. The Czechs won 9-4, and we get some quotes from Gary, along with his resume of playing the Japanese, West Germany, and Poland in the late 1970’s, and the Czechs (3 times), Americans and the Swedes. Notable Czech players on the team: Ivan Droppa, Jiri Beranek, Marek Zadina, Robert Petrovicky and Ziggy Palffy.
